Chatzidakis' research centers on the reception and transformation of classical antiquity in medieval and early modern European art, with particular emphasis on Ciriaco d'Ancona's pioneering work documenting Greek antiquities. His scholarship explores the intercultural dynamics between Byzantine and Western artistic traditions, especially in Crete and Venice. A distinctive strand of his work examines chess iconography as a lens for understanding gender representation, power dynamics, and allegorical thinking in early modern visual culture. His methodological approach blends Warburgian iconology with contemporary reception theory, focusing on how ancient motifs were adapted for political, religious, and cultural purposes during the Renaissance.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent scholarly trajectory examining how Renaissance humanists engaged with classical antiquity through visual culture. His work demonstrates particular expertise in manuscript studies (especially the Barberini Codex), numismatic evidence, and architectural documentation. The thematic threads connecting his research include the transformation of ancient fortifications in Renaissance imagination, the adaptation of mythological figures like the Nereids, and the political symbolism embedded in artistic representations of antiquity. His scholarship increasingly focuses on papal concepts of image culture and the pragmatic use of artistic heritage in religious contexts.
Chatzidakis has been actively involved in multiple significant research projects including the DFG-funded "Bildkritik und pragmatische Bildkultur im europäischen Mittelalter" and the Collaborative Research Center SFB 644 "Transformationen der Antike." His editorial work includes co-editing "Con bella maniera. Festgabe für Peter Seiler zum 65. Geburtstag" (2021). He regularly presents at international conferences with upcoming engagements including the "3. Netzwerktreffen Italienforschung" in October 2025.
His academic activities extend beyond traditional research to include significant contributions to cultural heritage documentation, particularly his leadership of the project "Erfassung und Verwertung des materiellen Kulturerbes der Präfektur von Chania (Kreta)" in 2012-2013. His international scholarly network includes collaborations with institutions in Florence, London, Athens, and Venice, reflecting the transnational nature of his research on Mediterranean artistic exchanges.
