His research spans ornament studies, medieval visual culture, image theory, and portrait research, with a focus on how classical antiquity was transformed in medieval and Renaissance art. He has extensively studied topics like political iconography, communal heraldry, and spolia research, contributing to interdisciplinary projects like the Collaborative Research Center 644 and the Topoi Cluster of Excellence.
The 15 most recent publications reflect his engagement with medieval and Renaissance sculpture, antiquity reception, visual epistemology, and art-historical theory. These works span from 2018 (on Einhard’s Vita Karoli Magni) back to 2002 (Duccio’s Maestà and classical spolia).
Colleagues honored him with the Festschrift Con bella maniera (2021) for his 65th birthday, acknowledging his interdisciplinary methodologies and enduring influence. He has led significant projects like HyperGiotto and collaborated on spolia research volumes, while mentoring junior researchers and advising on grants.
