Dr. Michaela Schratzberger is an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of East Anglia's School of Environmental Sciences and Science Director at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas). She holds a BSc in Biological Oceanography from the University of Hamburg (1994) and a PhD in Marine Ecology from the University of Hamburg/Plymouth Marine Laboratory (1998). With over 20 years of post-doctoral experience, her research focuses on benthic ecosystems, environmental change impacts, and the policy-science interface.
Key Research Interests:
- Changes in meiofaunal communities under environmental pressures
- Effects of natural/man-made disturbances on biodiversity
- Policy integration for marine protected areas
Her recent publications explore topics like marine biodiversity accounting, decommissioning impacts, and invasive species. She has led major initiatives such as the Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning (MARBEF) program and supervised three successful PhD students. She serves as an Associate Editor for Marine Biodiversity and advises UK environmental policy.
Grants & Collaborations:
- Directed Cefas-funded programs on microbial ecology and microplastics
- Contributed to the UK Marine Ecosystems Research Programme (MERP)
She is a member of the International Association of Meiobenthologists and actively engages in UN Sustainable Development Goals related to marine conservation.
