Dr. Michaela Schratzberger serves as Science Director at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) and holds an Honorary Associate Professor position at the University of East Anglia. She became a Trustee of Plymouth Marine Laboratory in 2024, returning to the institution where she completed her PhD in 1995. Her career spans over 25 years in government science with extensive expertise in marine ecology and interdisciplinary research.
Her research focuses on marine biodiversity, ecosystem protection, and science-policy integration. She is deeply committed to generating actionable scientific evidence for environmental decision-making, working with national and international stakeholders across academia, government, NGOs, and industry. Her work directly informs ministerial advice on marine conservation strategies and ocean sustainability initiatives.
Dr. Schratzberger holds multiple influential advisory positions including Scientific Advisor to Defra on marine protection, member of Defra’s Steering Committee for Highly Protected Marine Areas, and participant in the ICES Working Group on Biodiversity Science. She also serves on the Stakeholder Advisory Board for the University of Southampton’s School of Ocean and Earth Science, demonstrating her cross-institutional leadership in marine science policy.
