Michael Welker is a Professor of Financial Accounting at the Smith School of Business, Queen's University. He holds the title of Distinguished Professor and has held editorial roles including Editor-in-Chief of Contemporary Accounting Research. His research focuses on accounting disclosure practices, international accounting harmonization, corporate governance, and earnings management. He has been recognized with the Haim Falk Award (CAAA) and Outstanding Service Award (AAA International Section).
Education: PhD (1993) and Master's (1989) in Accounting from the University of Iowa; B.Sc. in Business Administration from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He currently supervises a postdoctoral fellow, Jing Wang.
Key research themes include the impact of accounting standards on firm decisions, analyst behavior, and market reactions. His work appears in top journals such as The Accounting Review and Contemporary Accounting Research. He serves on editorial boards and advisory councils for accounting institutions.
Affiliations include the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and roles as a consulting editor for major accounting journals. His recent work explores accounting conservatism, cross-listing decisions, and governance mechanisms influencing disclosure perceptions.
