Michael Weinstein serves as an Associate Teaching Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Connecticut College, where he has been a faculty member since 2003. He is affiliated with the Physics, Astronomy and Geophysics Department, housed in the F. W. Olin Science Center.
Dr. Weinstein earned his Ph.D. in Astronomy from Pennsylvania State University in August 2002, completing his doctoral thesis on an algorithm to obtain photometric redshifts for quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. His educational expertise focuses on introductory physics and astronomy instruction.
His teaching specialty includes first-year "studio" physics, which integrates lectures with hands-on laboratory work, a format he has taught since 2005. He also teaches introductory astronomy lectures and labs for non-science majors, explaining how scientific principles apply to cosmic phenomena. Prior to joining Connecticut College, he taught introductory astronomy courses at Penn State, presented public lectures through the astronomy department's Friedman Lecture Series and AstroFest summer festival, served as K-12 Outreach Coordinator for five years, and conducted hundreds of planetarium shows.
Within the department, Professor Weinstein is responsible for managing the introductory physics laboratory equipment, including setup, takedown, and purchasing. His commitment to science education extends beyond the classroom to public outreach and K-12 education initiatives.
