Michael Toneff, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Widener University’s College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on cancer biology, specifically the molecular mechanisms enabling aggressive cancer behaviors such as metastasis and therapy resistance, with a strong emphasis on epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). He holds a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Baylor College of Medicine (2011) and a BS in Biology from Ohio State University (2005). Dr. Toneff’s teaching philosophy integrates laboratory research skills into classroom learning to foster analytical thinking and holistic understanding of biological concepts.
Education:
- PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology, Baylor College of Medicine, 2011
- BS in Biology, Ohio State University, 2005
Research Interests: Dr. Toneff investigates how cancer cells acquire invasive and drug-resistant properties through EMT processes. His work explores molecular regulators like GSK3β and WNT-FOXO1 pathways, aiming to uncover therapeutic targets to reverse EMT and improve cancer treatment outcomes.
Publications: His research spans cancer stem cell biology, immunotherapy resistance, and drug discovery, with notable contributions to Nature Communications, Nature Cell Biology, and Developmental Cell.
Awards:
- Outstanding Researcher Award, Widener University, 2023
Teaching & Mentorship: Dr. Toneff emphasizes experiential learning, designing classroom exercises to teach critical thinking and problem-solving. He has mentored undergraduates in laboratory research through the IRACDA postdoctoral fellowship program.
