Michael Swaine is an Associate Professor and Chair of the 3D4M (Three-Dimensional Forum: Ceramics + Glass + Sculpture) program at the University of Washington. He holds an MA from the University of California, Berkeley, and a BFA from Alfred University. His work spans ceramics, installation, and interdisciplinary collaborations, with a focus on participatory art and environmental themes. He has exhibited at institutions like the Guggenheim and co-founded projects like the Free Mending Library, earning a Jefferson Award for Public Service in 2015.
Swaine’s research explores intersections of art, science, and social practice, often through collaborations with the collective Futurefarmers. Notable projects include For Want of a Nail (2019), a book addressing historical and environmental narratives, and exhibitions like Futurefarmers: Out Of Place, In Place (2018). He previously taught at California College of the Arts and Mills College.
Awards include the Jefferson Award for Public Service (2015). His work integrates conceptual art with community engagement, emphasizing sustainability and material innovation.
