Michael Sousa serves as an Associate Professor at the Sturm College of Law, University of Denver, specializing in bankruptcy and commercial law through the Corporate & Commercial Law Program. His scholarly work has been cited in multiple judicial opinions including federal circuit courts and bankruptcy courts nationwide.
His academic credentials include a JD from Rutgers University School of Law, an LL.M. in bankruptcy from St. John’s University School of Law, an MA in anthropology from the University of Denver, and ongoing PhD studies in sociology at the University of Colorado – Boulder.
Professor Sousa's research focuses on bankruptcy jurisprudence and commercial transactions, evidenced by his co-authorship of the Consumer Bankruptcy Manual and editorial contributions to leading publications including the Journal of Bankruptcy Law and Practice, American Bankruptcy Institute Journal, and Norton Bankruptcy Law and Practice 3d. His scholarship demonstrates significant influence in legal practice, with citations spanning circuit courts, bankruptcy courts, and a U.S. Supreme Court appellate brief.
He serves on the Advisory Board for St. John’s University School of Law's LL.M. in Bankruptcy Program and the Editorial Advisory Board for the American Bankruptcy Institute Law Review. Prior to academia, Professor Sousa practiced restructuring law at Duane Morris LLP and clerked for federal bankruptcy judges including Rosemary Gambardella and Donald H. Steckroth in New Jersey, as well as district and appellate court judges.
