Edward A. Hartnett is the Richard J. Hughes Professor of Constitutional and Public Law at Seton Hall University School of Law. He has been a faculty member since 1992 and holds leadership roles such as Reporter for the Advisory Committee on the Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure (appointed by Chief Justice John Roberts in 2018) and Member of the New Jersey Supreme Court Civil Practice Committee. His expertise focuses on Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, and Federal Courts, with a specialization in the history and practice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Education: A.B., magna cum laude from Harvard University; J.D. from New York University School of Law (Order of the Coif, highest award recipient). Post-graduate clerkships included Judge Frederick B. Lacey, Judge Robert E. Cowen (U.S. District Court), and Chief Judge John J. Gibbons (Third Circuit Court of Appeals). Prior to academia, he practiced with the Federal Public Defender and the law firm Robinson, St. John & Wayne.
Research interests span Supreme Court practice, federal jurisdiction, constitutional federalism, and admiralty law. His co-authored Supreme Court Practice is a seminal work in legal procedure. Recent articles address topics like statutory interpretation, gerrymandering, and electoral systems.
