Michael Seewald is a Professor of Dogmatics and History of Dogma at the University of Münster, where he has served as Director of the Seminar for Dogmatics and History of Dogma since 2017. He is also the Spokesperson of the Cluster of Excellence and serves on the Board of Directors and General Assembly. His academic work focuses on Enlightenment Theology (late 17th to early 19th century), theories of doctrinal development, stability and dynamics of religious concepts of humanity, and religious conceptions of politics.
Seewald's research interests center on dogmatic development, theological anthropology, ecumenical and interreligious theology, and the methodological questions surrounding these fields. His work examines how religious doctrines evolve while maintaining continuity, with particular attention to Catholic theology's engagement with modernity, democracy, and pluralism. He has made significant contributions to understanding the relationship between doctrinal development and church authority.
His scholarly output shows consistent focus on the dynamics of dogma, church governance, and theological methodology. Recent publications demonstrate increasing engagement with contemporary church issues including synodality, democratic principles in church structures, and responses to papal teachings. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary theological challenges facing the Catholic Church.
