Michael Schindler is a Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Manitoba's Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources. His research focuses on nano-scale environmental processes, including nanoparticle transport, mineral dissolution mechanisms, and microbial-mineral interactions. He holds a Ph.D. in Mineralogy from Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, Frankfurt, Germany (1997).
His research interests specifically include: 1) mineralogical processes in confined pore spaces, 2) bacterial-mineral surface interactions, 3) dissolution mechanisms of minerals, 4) nanoparticle transport in soils and ore deposits, 5) nanoparticle crystallization, and 6) mineral-hosted nano-inclusions. Recent work explores environmental impacts of nanoparticles from industrial and natural sources, including smelters, coal fires, and uranium deposits.
His publications (2017-2025) highlight advanced techniques like TEM and ICP-MS to study colloidal mobility, soil contamination dynamics, and mineral transformations. Key themes include nanoparticle sequestration, metal(loid) fate in contaminated soils, and environmental records preserved in mineral surface coatings. His work bridges Earth science and environmental engineering, addressing global challenges like mine remediation and pollution monitoring.
Teaching responsibilities include GEOL 2770 (Inorganic Geochemistry), GEOL 3450 (Hydrogeology), and Advanced Mineralogy courses. Ongoing research applies cutting-edge analytical methods to understand nanoparticle behavior in complex environmental systems.
