David M. Singer

David M. Singer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Kent State University, affiliated with the Environmental Science and Design Research Institute. His research integrates mineralogy, biogeochemistry, and hydrology to study contaminant transport mechanisms at mineral-water interfaces, focusing on urban soil lead contamination and coal mining impacts in Appalachia. He holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University (Geological and Environmental Sciences) and a B.S. from the University of Michigan (Geological Sciences).

Research interests include: (1) Mineral surface coatings and metal(loid) interactions, (2) Field/laboratory studies of contaminant transport dynamics, and (3) Applications of synchrotron-based spectroscopy. Current projects address urban Pb speciation and coal mine soil geochemistry. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary methods combining field observations with advanced analytical techniques.

Teaching awards include the 2019 Distinguished Teacher Award (College of Arts & Sciences) and 2018/2019 Glenn W Frank Outstanding Teaching Award (Department of Geology). His research group operates the Environmental Mineralogy and Geochemistry lab, focusing on environmental remediation strategies and contaminant fate studies.
