Michael Rea serves as the Rev. John A. O'Brien Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame and holds an Honorary Professorship at the School of Divinity, University of St. Andrews. He directs Notre Dame's Center for Philosophy of Religion, which advances research in theistic and Christian philosophy through residential fellowships, grant programs, multi-year research initiatives, and international academic events including conferences and public debates.
His scholarly focus centers on the intersection of analytical philosophy and religious inquiry, with primary expertise in Philosophy of Religion, Theistic Philosophy, and Christian epistemology. Rea investigates foundational questions regarding divine hiddenness, religious belief rationality, and metaphysical frameworks for theology, contributing significantly to contemporary discourse on faith-reason relationships and the problem of evil within Christian physicalism.
As Director of the Center for Philosophy of Religion, Rea cultivates a collaborative research ecosystem that bridges philosophical and theological scholarship through structured fellowship programs, targeted funding mechanisms, and high-impact scholarly convenings that connect global academics in sustained interdisciplinary dialogue.
