Mark C. Murphy is the Robert L. McDevitt and Catherine H. McDevitt Chair in Religious Philosophy and Chair of the Department of Philosophy at Georgetown University since 1995. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Notre Dame and a B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin.
His research focuses on ethics, philosophy of law, and philosophy of religion, with notable contributions to natural law theory, divine authority, and theological voluntarism. Key works include Natural Law and Practical Rationality, God and Moral Law, and Divine Holiness and Divine Action.
His scholarship engages with classical thinkers like Aquinas, Hobbes, and Suarez, exploring intersections between divine perfection, moral norms, and legal philosophy. Murphy critiques natural law jurisprudence and defends theistic explanations of morality against secular alternatives.
He has held editorial roles and contributed to interdisciplinary dialogues on political sovereignty, legal theory, and moral theology. His work addresses foundational questions in religious ethics, including divine action, moral perfection, and the problem of evil.
