Emily McCarty is an Assistant Professor at Samford University's Howard College of Arts and Sciences within the Department of Classics and Philosophy. Prior to joining Samford, she held teaching positions at Hope College (2022-2023) and Saint Louis University (2019-2022), where she instructed courses in ethics and philosophy, including global ethics, love and evil, and introduction to philosophy.
Her research operates at the intersection of philosophy of religion and ethical theory, focusing on profound questions such as: Does God have moral obligations to human beings? What constitutes the nature of divine love? A significant portion of her work engages with the problem of evil, which challenges theistic frameworks by questioning how a benevolent and omnipotent God can permit suffering. McCarty also extends her expertise to public discourse, participating in the podcast Agnostish and engaging high school students in discussions about the problem of evil and its apologetic implications.
Outside her academic pursuits, McCarty enjoys outdoor activities, true crime podcasts, and socializing over coffee with friends.
