Michael R. Dores is an Associate Professor and Chair of Biology at Hofstra University. He holds a PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Cell Biology from Northwestern University (2008) and dual BA degrees in Biology and Anthropology from the University of Oregon's Robert Donald Clark Honors College (2003). His postdoctoral training at UC San Diego was supported by NIH grants and the California Tobacco-related Disease Research Program fellowship, culminating in an NIH-IRACDA fellowship focused on inclusive teaching.
Research interests center on cellular barriers in human diseases, investigating how pathogens and cancer cells disrupt these barriers for infection/metastasis. He teaches courses in genetics, cell biology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and disease-focused advanced topics. His pedagogical approach emphasizes hands-on laboratory experiences and small-class engagement, informed by his IRACDA training. Awards include the California Tobacco Program fellowship and NIH-IRACDA support.
Teaching spans undergraduate and graduate levels, including specialized courses like Cell Biology of Disease and Biochemistry Mechanisms. Professional service includes departmental leadership roles. His work aims to bridge biomedical research with educational equity through mentorship and innovative curricula.
