معرفی
Denise J. Montell is the Duggan Professor and Distinguished Professor in the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). She leads a lab focused on cell survival (anastasis), cell motility, and understudied cellular processes like cell cannibalism. Her research integrates molecular genetics, live imaging, and computational modeling to explore mechanisms underlying cancer, neurodegeneration, and regeneration.
Education: B.S. in Biochemistry & Cell Biology (UC San Diego), Ph.D. in Neuroscience (Stanford University). Postdoctoral training at the Carnegie Institution. Previously served as a full professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Research Interests:
- Anastasis: Survival of cells from apoptosis, with implications for heart disease and cancer therapy resistance.
- Cell Motility: Mechanisms of collective cell migration in development and metastasis using Drosophila models.
- Cellular Behaviors: Cannibalism, stem cell longevity during diapause, and neolamination.
Awards:
- Elected to National Academy of Sciences (2021)
- NIH Director’s Pioneer Award
- Fellowships from AAAS, ASCB
Labs & Affiliations: Director of UCSB’s Center for Aging and Longevity Studies (CALS), affiliated with Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and Biomolecular Science & Engineering departments. Serves on advisory boards for the National Cancer Institute and Genetics Society of America.
