Michael F. Carey is a Professor in the Department of Biological Chemistry at the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He specializes in eukaryotic gene regulation, focusing on chromatin dynamics, transcriptional mechanisms, and epigenetic regulation. His research explores how chromatin structure and coactivator complexes influence gene expression, with applications in cancer biology and stem cell differentiation.
Dr. Carey earned his PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1986. His work has been supported by NIH grants, including roles as Principal Investigator for projects on chromatin remodeling (NIH R01GM074701), Pol II elongation (NIH R01GM085002), and IRACDA training programs (NIH K12GM106996).
His research interests span molecular mechanisms of transcriptional regulation, histone modifications, and the interplay between chromatin and transcription factors. Recent work investigates nucleosome remodeling during immune responses, epigenetic changes in aging neural stem cells, and the role of Mediator complexes in enhancing transcription.
Notable contributions include studies on histone H3-H4's enzymatic activity, the role of EP400 in H3.3 deposition during gene activation, and the coordination between chromatin remodelers like Ino80C and Mot1. His findings advance understanding of fundamental genetic processes with implications for cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.
