Dr. Michael P. Weir is an Assistant Professor of Physics in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Nottingham. He began his academic journey at the University of Nottingham in 2002, completing an M.Sci. degree in Physics, and returned after several years as a Nottingham Research Fellow (NRF) for three years before attaining his current faculty position on December 1, 2023.
His research focuses on developing advanced materials and systems for sustainable energy harvesting, with particular expertise in polymers, nanocomposites, thermoelectrics, plant microbial fuel cells, and magnetic energy harvesting technologies. He leads interdisciplinary research projects bridging physics, chemistry, and engineering.
Dr. Weir's publication record shows a strong focus on novel thermoelectric materials and energy harvesting systems, with recent publications examining spin-Seebeck effects, printable thermoelectric inks, and sustainable polymer alternatives for energy applications. His work demonstrates an interdisciplinary approach combining materials synthesis, characterization, and device implementation.
He actively supervises PhD students and early career researchers, including Dr. Carl (Yaoyang) Hu and Zhongnan Duan, and collaborates across departments including Biosciences and Engineering. Dr. Weir is involved with the Interdisciplinary Transport Lab and contributes to the university's sustainability initiatives in research, teaching, and working practices.
