Professor Patricia Weir is a distinguished academic at the University of Windsor, serving as both a Professor in the Faculty of Human Kinetics and the Dean of Graduate Studies. With a career spanning over three decades since joining the department in 1991, Dr. Weir has established herself as a leading researcher in motor performance and aging.
Dr. Weir's educational background includes:
- Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo
- MHK (Master of Human Kinetics) from the University of Windsor
- BHK (Bachelor of Human Kinetics) from the University of Windsor
Her research focuses on understanding how motor performance changes with age and the factors contributing to successful aging. Dr. Weir examines the role of physical activity and engagement in promoting healthy aging, skill acquisition across the lifespan, sport commitment among Masters athletes, and the role of perception in posture assessment. Her interdisciplinary work bridges kinesiology, psychology, and gerontology to address critical questions about human movement throughout the lifespan.
Dr. Weir's scholarly contributions have been recognized through leadership positions including President of the Canadian Society for Psychomotor Learning and Sport Psychology (SCAPPS), Chair of the Ontario Council of Graduate Studies, and Vice-President for the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies. She recently served as Interim Provost and Vice-President Academic before returning to her current role as Dean of Graduate Studies.
Her research program has consistently explored relative age effects in sports participation, aging and physical activity engagement, and successful aging trajectories, with publications spanning from 2017-2022 that demonstrate both methodological diversity and substantive depth across multiple journals in sports science, psychology, and gerontology.
Dr. Weir has mentored numerous graduate students who have gone on to make their own contributions to the field. Her leadership extends beyond research to shaping graduate education policy at provincial and national levels, demonstrating her commitment to advancing academic excellence and student success.
