Michael Norko, MD, MA, is a Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University’s School of Medicine, affiliated with the Connecticut Mental Health Center and the Division of Law and Psychiatry. He holds leadership roles, including Director of Forensic Services for the CT Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services (since 2007) and Editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (since 2019).
Trained at Johns Hopkins, SUNY Upstate, and Yale, Dr. Norko’s expertise spans forensic psychiatry, risk assessment, and the intersection of psychiatry with religion/spirituality. His research focuses on extreme risk protection orders, violence prevention, and legal/ethical dilemmas in mental health.
He has led national studies on 'red flag laws' and their impact on suicide prevention, published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, and earned accolades such as the Howard Zonana Prize and Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Norko also teaches on religion and psychiatry at Yale Divinity School and chairs committees on spirituality in mental health.
His career includes 17 years at the Whiting Forensic Hospital, roles in professional organizations like AAPL, and advocacy for patients’ rights through awards like the Roger Coleman Service Award.
