Dr. Reena Kapoor serves as Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine with a secondary appointment as Visiting Associate Professor at Yale Law School. She directs the Law & Psychiatry Division and serves as Program Director for Yale's forensic psychiatry fellowship, one of the country's largest training programs for forensic psychiatrists.
Dr. Kapoor's research focuses on the intersection of mental illness, violence, and the criminal justice system, with particular expertise in psychiatric evaluation and treatment of violent and justice-involved individuals across various treatment settings including prisons, jails, forensic hospitals, and community settings. Her scholarly work examines extreme risk protection orders, cultural competence in correctional mental health, and the impact of solitary confinement on mental health.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on extreme risk protection orders across multiple states and demographic groups, including older adults. These studies examine implementation patterns, suicide prevention effects, and policy implications of these legal mechanisms designed to temporarily remove firearms from individuals deemed at extreme risk of harming themselves or others.
Dr. Kapoor holds significant leadership positions in professional organizations, serving as chair of the American Psychiatric Association's Committee on Judicial Action and Vice President of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. She is also a past president of the Connecticut Psychiatric Society, Association of Directors of Forensic Psychiatry Fellowships, and International Association for Forensic Psychotherapy.
As an educator, Dr. Kapoor teaches and supervises fellows in forensic psychiatry and has lectured internationally on topics at the intersection of mental health and law. Her clinical work spans multiple settings including the Connecticut Mental Health Center where she provides services through the Law & Psychiatry Division.
