Michael Nelson is the Fulmer Professor of Political Science at Rhodes College and a Senior Fellow at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center. He specializes in presidential politics, southern politics, and electoral systems. His research has been recognized with the Richard E. Neustadt Award (2015) and the V.O. Key Award (2009). Nelson has authored or co-authored influential books such as Resilient America and The American Presidency, and leads a series analyzing every U.S. presidential election since 1984.
Education: B.A. from College of William and Mary; M.A. and Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. He teaches courses on the American presidency, southern politics, and electoral systems. His work extends beyond academia, exploring cultural figures like Frank Sinatra and C.S. Lewis, as well as broader themes in liberal education and public policy.
Advising includes Rhodes student John Lyman Mason, co-author of a prize-winning book. His writing spans political science, cultural studies, and interdisciplinary topics, reflecting a commitment to bridging academic and public discourse.
