Mark J. Rozell is the Founding Dean of the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University, holding the Ruth D. and John T. Hazel Chair in Public Policy. He is a prolific scholar with 13 authored/co-authored books and 20 edited volumes, focusing on U.S. government and politics, including the presidency, religion-politics intersections, media influence, southern politics, and electoral strategies.
His research emphasizes constitutional governance, executive power dynamics, federalism, and electoral politics. Recent works explore transformational shifts in southern politics, African American political leadership, and the evolving role of religion in U.S. governance. Rozell has testified before Congress on executive privilege and lectured globally in over 30 countries. He writes a biweekly column on Virginia politics for the Richmond Times-Dispatch and serves as a judge for the Gerald R. Ford Award Committee since 1994.
Publications highlight critical analyses of presidential authority, federal-state relations, and minority political participation. His work on 'unitary executive theory' critiques potential constitutional overreach, while studies on southern politics document demographic-driven political transformations. Rozell’s international lectures and media engagements reflect his commitment to bridging academic research and public discourse.
