Dr. Michael Morgan is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the RECOVER Injury Research Centre within the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Queensland. As a mid-career academic with a robust foundation in basic sciences, he has established a distinguished research path exploring the biological underpinnings of pain—particularly musculoskeletal pain and osteoarthritis. His influential lead author publications in high-impact journals including PAIN, Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, and Bone bridge molecular mechanisms with translational insights. Currently pivoting toward clinical research, he is deepening his focus on whiplash injury and the multidimensional nature of pain, driving cross-disciplinary studies that connect laboratory findings with real-world patient outcomes.
Dr. Morgan's educational background includes:
- Bachelor of Science (Honours), The University of Queensland
- Doctor of Philosophy, The University of Queensland
His research interests encompass a broad spectrum of biomedical disciplines including basic pharmacology, biomedical and clinical sciences, immunology, innate immunity, neurosciences, peripheral nervous system function, pharmacology and pharmaceutical sciences, and sensory systems. His work primarily investigates pain mechanisms, particularly focusing on how sensory innervation to bones and joints contributes to conditions like osteoarthritis and other musculoskeletal disorders. He employs sophisticated neuroanatomical and electrophysiological techniques to study nociception and pain pathways at the molecular and cellular levels.
Analysis of Dr. Morgan's publication record reveals consistent research themes centered on pain mechanisms, particularly bone and joint pain. His work demonstrates an evolution from basic pharmacological investigations toward more clinically relevant pain conditions. A significant portion of his research examines how specific proteins and receptors (including BDNF, Artemin, Piezo2, ASIC3, and TRPV1) modulate pain signaling in bone afferent neurons. His publications span multiple disciplines including neuroscience, immunology, rheumatology, and pharmacology, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to understanding pain mechanisms.
Dr. Morgan is available for supervision and has served as an Associate Advisor for PhD students. His supervision history includes work on topics related to dynorphin biotransformation and inflammatory signaling pathways, as well as beta-endorphin biotransformation and modulation of inflammatory signals. He collaborates with prominent researchers including Professor Nick Shaw, Professor Peter Cabot, and Associate Professor Paul Gray, indicating strong integration within the University of Queensland's research ecosystem. His work appears across 39 total publications including 32 journal articles, 6 conference publications, and 1 other output, demonstrating substantial scholarly productivity in his field.
