Dr. Michael Milsom is a Senior Group Leader at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and heads the Division of Experimental Hematology at HI-STEM, Heidelberg. He leads a research group focused on hematopoietic stem cells, DNA damage, and epigenetics in cancer progression.
- PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Leeds
- Postdoctoral training at Paterson Institute for Cancer Research (UK) and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (USA)
- Faculty position at Harvard Medical School/Children’s Hospital Boston before joining HI-STEM
His research explores the interplay between DNA damage, inflammation, and stem cell specification in hematopoiesis and leukemia. Key themes include epigenetic regulation, therapy resistance in JAK2-mutated myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), and the role of EVI1 in DNA repair mechanisms.
The lab’s alumni include PhD graduates such as Ian Ghezzi (cancer stem cell dormancy), Lena Bognar (EVI1 and DNA damage response), and Marleen Büchler-Schäff. Collaborative presentations at conferences like the European Hematology Association (EHA) highlight their contributions to understanding stem cell aging and metastasis.
Lab members include PhD students Yiwen Zhang, Lina Merg, and research assistant Victoria Honekamp, alongside postdocs like Charles Dussiau. The group’s work is supported by grants and partnerships with institutions like the Dietmar Hopp Stiftung.
