Michael Martin is a Professor of History and Gender & Sexuality Studies at Fort Lewis College, where he has served since 2004, including as Chair of the History Department. He holds a Ph.D. in History from Western Michigan University (2005) and B.A./M.A. degrees in English and Medieval Studies from the University of Iowa (1989) and Western Michigan University (1996), respectively.

Dr. Martin is a specialist in medieval European history, focusing on the Carolingian period and early medieval Ireland. His research examines the dissemination of theological knowledge through sermons and biblical commentaries, particularly how pastoral theology shaped peasant communities. He is currently working on a critical edition of an Irish Latin Psalms commentary (c. 820) and a monograph analyzing monastic work-life balance.
His recent projects include medieval preaching, biblical exegesis, and LGBTQ history preservation. He has secured grants for library collections and served as coordinator for Fort Lewis' John F. Reed Honors Program (2007-2012). He also teaches honors courses and the Global History of Disease, a remote class.

Dr. Martin is active in professional organizations like the International Medieval Sermon Studies Society, Medieval Academy of America, and American Society of Irish Medieval Studies. He chairs the Sexual Assault Services Organization of Durango's Board of Directors and participates in Colorado Historical Foundation's LGBTQ History Sites Survey Plan.
