PD Dr. Christoph Galle is a Privatdozent (Senior Lecturer) in Medieval History at the University of Hamburg's Faculty of Humanities, Department of History. He has held this position since July 2021, following his habilitation and conferment of Venia legendi for Medieval History. Complementing his university role, since May 2021 he has also been teaching Latin and History at St. Franziskus Gymnasium Olpe, a private high school for boys and girls operated by the Franciscan Sisters of Olpe.
Dr. Galle's academic journey began at Philipps-University Marburg, where he completed his Magister Artium in Medieval Latin Philology and Modern History (2005-2010) and earned his First State Examination for teaching at high schools (2003-2008). He completed his doctoral dissertation "Hodie nullus - cras maximus. Berühmtwerden und Berühmtsein im frühen 16. Jahrhundert am Beispiel des Erasmus von Rotterdam" in 2012, published in 2013.
His research spans multiple interconnected domains within medieval studies, with particular focus on cultural history (early medieval patristic reception and Renaissance humanism), political history (Carolingian rule practices), church history (history of the church and church criticism in Middle Ages and Reformation), media history (medieval manuscripts and early print history), sermon research (history of medieval sermons), language history (Medieval Latin, Neo-Latin and vernacular languages), and medieval hagiography (especially Boniface, Bruno the Carthusian).
Dr. Galle's scholarly output demonstrates a strong trend toward interdisciplinary research connecting sermon history with political and cultural developments throughout the Middle Ages. His work shows particular expertise in Carolingian history, Erasmus studies, and the intersection of religious and political power in medieval Europe. His recent publications reflect a growing interest in cataloging and analyzing medieval manuscripts, particularly those held at the Bodleian Library in Oxford.
