Thomas Maurer, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of History and Director of the Medieval Studies Minor at Ave Maria University. He holds a B.A. from Christendom College, an M.A. from Western Michigan University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee.
His research focuses on apocalyptic cultures in thirteenth-century Italy, particularly pseudo-prophecies linked to Joachim of Fiore. He examines how these prophecies framed Italian cities as biblical entities, contributing to his first book project. Maurer also teaches courses on medieval Italy, Catholic Church history, and apocalyptic theories in pre-modern contexts.
Recent publications include a chapter in Prophecy and Politics: Apocalyptic Cultures in Medieval and Renaissance Europe (2024) and an article in Medieval Sermon Studies (2022), exploring Innocent III’s almsgiving policies.
