معرفی
Paulo Emanuel T F Fonseca is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geology at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon. With over 200 publications in Portugal and internationally, he has established himself as a leading geologist specializing in structural geology, tectonics, and hydrogeology. He serves as a researcher at the IDL-Instituto Dom Luiz and is responsible for the LabGExp (Experimental Geology Laboratory) of GeoFCUL.
His academic journey began with a degree in Geology (scientific branch) from the University of Lisbon in 1985. He joined the Geology Department as an Intern Assistant in February 1987, completed his Master's equivalent (P.A.P.C.C.) in December 1989, earned his PhD in Internal Geodynamics (Structural Geology) in June 1995, and achieved his Agregação in Geology in November 2003, after which he became a permanent faculty member.
Fonseca's research spans a diverse range of geological disciplines, with particular expertise in fracturing, applied structural geology and mapping, ophiolitic complexes, oceanic crust, Variscan and Alpine orogenies, brittle and ductile deformation, mountain building processes, oceanic island geology (particularly Macaronesia), environmental geology, CO2 sequestration, gas and oil storage, natural reservoirs, and hydrogeology. His work often employs experimental geology and analog experimentation techniques.
His publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on Iberian geology, particularly the Serra da Estrela region and Madeira Island, with recent work emphasizing integrated hydrogeological systems in mountain environments and the tectonic evolution of oceanic islands. His research combines field observations with laboratory analysis, often employing isotopic and geochemical techniques to understand complex geological systems.
As an educator, Fonseca has supervised numerous Master's and PhD theses across various geological disciplines. He previously served on the National Education Council (CNE) representing the Portuguese Federation of Scientific Societies Associations (FEPASC) for three complete terms. He has also taught as a Guest Professor at Universidade Aberta and Universidade da Madeira.
Fonseca directs the LabGExp (Experimental Geology Laboratory) at GeoFCUL, where his team conducts research on analog modeling of geological processes, fluid flow in fractured media, and experimental approaches to understanding tectonic and hydrogeological phenomena. His laboratory work complements extensive field studies conducted throughout Portugal and the Macaronesian islands.
