Professor Michael Mair is a sociologist at the University of Liverpool, holding the rank of Professor of Sociology since 2010. His work focuses on politics, governmental practices, and methodology in social sciences. He leads engage@liverpool, directs cross-faculty research methods initiatives, and serves as NCRM Senior Fellow. He has published extensively on accountability in governance, military sociology, and AI ethics.
Education: B.A. Politics & Philosophy (Edinburgh), MSc/PhD (Manchester). Awards include the John Stewart Prize (2018) and Global Guest Professorship (Keio University, 2022).
Research interests span ethnomethodology, conversation analysis, digital methods, and the philosophy of science. Current projects investigate AI ethics, bureaucratic accountability, and military practices. He collaborates internationally with institutions like Goethe University Frankfurt and Keio University.
Teaches modules on sociological inquiry, medical humanities, and ethnomethodology. Supervises doctoral research in areas like algorithmic reasoning and decolonial thought.
