Professor Michael LaBelle serves as Head of Department at the Central European University (CEU) in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy. He holds a Ph.D. and MSc in Geographical Sciences from the University of Bristol and has held prestigious roles including the Jean Monnet Chair in Energy Innovations and Strategies (2017-2021) and Open Society University Network Senior Fellow (2022). His research focuses on energy governance, energy justice, geopolitical energy dynamics, and innovation policy in Central/Eastern Europe and the EU.

LaBelle’s work examines how state institutions shape energy technology investments, with geographic emphasis on Eastern Europe. He leads the Political Economy of Energy Transitions (POLET) research group and hosts the My Energy 2050 podcast, a platform for energy transition discourse. Recent publications analyze energy weaponization, EU Green Deal equity, and post-carbon institutional frameworks.
