Michael Kube

Michael Kube, born in 1968 in Kiel, serves as Privatdozent (Senior Lecturer) at the University of Würzburg and lecturer at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart. Since 1998, he has been a scientific staff member of the New Schubert Edition in Tübingen, joining its editorial board in 2002. He chairs the Stiftung Kulturfonds der VG Musikedition since 2013 and serves on the editorial board of The Terezín Composers’ Institute from 2019.

His academic foundation includes:

• Studies in Musicology, Art History, and European Ethnology/Volkskunde at the University of Kiel
• PhD (1996) on Hindemith's early string quartets
• Habilitation (2016) on the cultural history of the piano trio

Kube specializes in historical musicology with deep expertise in 18th-century keyboard repertoires and 19th-century chamber/symphonic traditions. His scholarship bridges German and Scandinavian musical heritage, particularly through critical examinations of early 20th-century composers.

His editorial legacy includes the Schubert Lied Lexicon (2012), a facsimile edition of Schubert's Winterreise (2014), and a Royal Swedish Academy biography of Allan Pettersson (2015). These works demonstrate his methodological rigor in source criticism and cultural contextualization.
