Michael Kube

Prof. Dr. Michael Kube is an Adjunct Professor of Musicology at the University of Würzburg's Institute for Music Research, Faculty of Philosophy. He also serves as a lecturer at the Stuttgart University of Music and holds a temporary professorship at Würzburg (2023/24). Kube studied musicology, art history, and European ethnology/folklore, earning his doctorate in 1996 with a thesis on Hindemith's early string quartets and habilitation in 2016 on the cultural history of the piano trio.

His research focuses on musicology spanning the 18th century to contemporary works, with specializations in keyboard music, chamber music, symphonic traditions, and Scandinavian music history. He maintains active scholarly contributions to Schubert studies through his editorial leadership at the Neue Schubert-Ausgabe since 1998.

Kube's publications demonstrate broad expertise across multiple historical periods, with recent work emphasizing cultural contexts of chamber music and Scandinavian symphonic traditions. He has edited critical editions for major publishers including Breitkopf & Härtel and Bärenreiter, with his edition of Alban Berg's Seven Early Songs winning the 2016 BEST EDITION prize.
