Prof. Dr. Michael Katzberg serves as Professor of Bioprocess Engineering and Biochemistry at Dresden University of Applied Sciences within the Faculty of Agriculture, Environment and Chemistry. Appointed in September 2022, he concurrently holds the position of Vice Dean of the Faculty and participates in the Study Commission for Chemical Engineering. His career bridges academic research and industrial biotechnology leadership.
His academic foundation includes:
- 2000-2005: Diploma in Food Chemistry, TU Dresden
- 2005-2009: Research Associate, TU Dresden Institute of Biochemistry
- 2008: Research stay, Lund University of Technology
- 2009: PhD in Biochemistry (γ-diketone biocatalysis)
Professor Katzberg's research centers on sustainable bioprocess development using extremophile microalgae. His work with Galdieria sulphuraria explores innovative photobioreactor configurations for phycocyanin production while utilizing wastewater streams, creating synergies between environmental remediation and high-value bioproduct synthesis. This approach demonstrates practical applications of biochemical engineering principles in circular economy frameworks.
He maintains active supervision of student research through Bachelor and Master theses in Chemical Engineering, with recent projects examining growth modeling in sugar-rich wastewater, scale-up challenges in mixotrophic cultivation, and natural biostimulant efficacy. Prospective students contact him directly for thesis opportunities in algal biotechnology systems.
As Vice Dean, Professor Katzberg shapes academic policy and curriculum development for the Chemical Engineering program while maintaining teaching responsibilities across biochemistry, bioprocess engineering, and advanced biotechnology courses.
