Michael J. Golec serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), where he teaches courses including History of Modern Graphic Design and Typographic Modernity. His academic foundation includes a PhD in Art History and Theory from Northwestern University (2003), MA in Design History, and BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois, Chicago.
Dr. Golec's educational background:
- PhD in Art History and Theory, Northwestern University, 2003
- MA in Design History, University of Illinois, Chicago, 1997
- BFA with honors in Graphic Design, University of Illinois, Chicago, 1991
His research centers on the theoretical and historical intersections of graphic visualization, technical imagery, and typography. Golec investigates how visual forms—from rural electrification posters to Eames furniture—mediate cultural narratives and technological understanding, with particular focus on materiality, semiotics, and the philosophical underpinnings of design. His work bridges art history, design theory, and visual culture studies through critical analysis of typographic systems and visual communication.
Recent publications demonstrate consistent engagement with material culture and visual epistemology, spanning Bauhaus legacies, historical typography, and the phenomenology of designed objects. His scholarship reveals patterns connecting industrial design innovation with cultural representation across 20th-century American contexts.
Major scholarly recognition includes:
- Graham Foundation Grant
- Anschutz Distinguished Fellow in American Studies at Princeton University
- Dartmouth College Humanities Institute Fellowship
- Terra Foundation for American Art Grant
- Wolfsonian Research Fellowship
- Iowa State University Bio Ethics Program Grant
Professor Golec actively mentors graduate researchers while securing significant external funding:
