Michael J. Deem is an Associate Professor in the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health. He serves as Core Faculty at the Center for Bioethics & Health Law, Interim Director of the Multidisciplinary Master of Public Health Program, and Associate Director of the Undergraduate Certificate in Bioethics. His research spans bioethics, philosophy of biology, public health ethics, and genetic counseling.

Dr. Deem’s work focuses on ethical dilemmas in genomics, vaccine refusal, and clinical decision-making. He has co-edited two influential texts, Nursing Ethics (2024) and The Oxford Handbook of Genetic Counseling (in press), and is writing Genetic Counseling Ethics (Oxford, 2025). His recent articles address rapid genomic sequencing, newborn screening, and social media health trends.
He collaborates on an NHGRI R25 grant with Duquesne University and Pitt, exploring genomic competencies for nurses. Awards include a 2024-2026 Signature Course Fellowship from Notre Dame. Dr. Deem teaches philosophy, healthcare ethics, and public health ethics, and directs the Bioethics, Public Health, and Human Flourishing Lecture Series (2024).
