Michael J Deem is an Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh, serving as Interim Program Director for the Multidisciplinary Master of Public Health program. He is a Resident Fellow at the Center for Philosophy of Science, faculty member in Human Genetics and the Center for Bioethics & Health Law, and Director of the Consortium Ethics Program in the Department of Medicine. Joining the faculty in Fall 2021, Dr. Deem has established himself as a prominent figure in bioethics and genomic medicine ethics.
His educational background includes a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame (2015), a Pediatric Ethics and Genomics Fellowship from Children's Mercy Hospital (2016), an MA in Philosophy from Texas A&M University (2009), an MA in Historical Theology from Saint Louis University (2005), and a BA in Philosophy and Theology from Franciscan University of Steubenville (2003).
Dr. Deem's research focuses on bioethics, particularly pediatric ethics and ethical issues in genetics and genomic medicine, philosophy of biology and medicine, and public health ethics. He has developed expertise in interprofessional ethics education, having taught ethics to genetic counseling, nursing, and medical students for several years. His scholarly work demonstrates a consistent focus on ethical challenges in vaccination practices, genomic medicine, and pediatric care.
His publications reveal a strong pattern of interdisciplinary scholarship bridging philosophy, medicine, nursing, and public health. The most recent articles show increasing emphasis on practical clinical ethics, vaccine hesitancy, and genomic medicine applications, while maintaining his philosophical foundations in evolutionary ethics and normative realism.
Dr. Deem actively mentors students across multiple disciplines, serving on thesis committees for research in mental health screening, genetic counseling, maternal-fetal medicine ethics, and public health interventions. His teaching responsibilities span multiple departments and programs, including Philosophy of Medicine, Ethical Issues in Clinical and Public Health Genetics, Ethics in Public and Community Health, and Rehabilitation Ethics.
As Director of the Consortium Ethics Program, he leads initiatives connecting ethics education across healthcare disciplines. His current book projects include Conceptual Issues in Genomic Medicine (Cambridge University Press), The Oxford Handbook of Genetic Counseling, and Nursing Ethics: Normative Foundations, Advanced Concepts, and Emerging Issues (both Oxford University Press).
