Steven Joffe serves as the Art and Ilene Penn Professor of Medical Ethics & Health Policy and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. He holds leadership positions as Chair of the Department of Medical Ethics & Health Policy, Director of the Penn Postdoctoral Training Program in the Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (ELSI) of Genetics and Genomics, and Co-director of the Cancer Control Program within the Abramson Cancer Center.
Dr. Joffe completed his undergraduate education at Harvard College (AB in Fine Art), earned his MD from the University of California, San Francisco, and obtained his MPH in Epidemiology from UC Berkeley. His clinical training includes pediatrics residency at UCSF and fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children's Hospital.
His research focuses on ethical challenges in clinical and translational investigation, genomic medicine, and science. Key areas include principal investigator responsibilities in multicenter trials, accountability in clinical research, children's capacity for research decisions, return of genetic results, integration of genomic technologies in cancer care, diagnosis of germline risk in young adults with cancer, and learning health systems. His work bridges pediatric oncology and bioethics, addressing practical ethical dilemmas in healthcare and research.
Dr. Joffe's extensive publication record demonstrates his leadership in bioethics, with recent work emphasizing research ethics, genomic medicine, pediatric decision-making, and regulatory science. His publications consistently address the practical implementation of ethical principles in clinical research and healthcare delivery.
