Lisa S Parker serves as Professor and Director of the Center for Bioethics & Health Law at the University of Pittsburgh, holding the Dickie, McCamey & Chilcote Professorship in Bioethics. She directs the Master of Arts Program in Bioethics, Graduate Certificate in Bioethics, and Research, Ethics and Society Initiatives of Pitt Research while serving as Faculty in Human Genetics and Associate Director for Bioethics of Pitt’s Institute for Precision Medicine.
She earned her PhD in Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh in 1990. Her research focuses on ethical frameworks for genetic/genomic research, mental health studies, and return of results, employing normative methods and feminist theory to examine bioethics as social practice. Current projects address ethical evaluation of healthcare worker research, neuro-rehabilitation ethics, and precision medicine’s impact on health disparities.
Recent publications demonstrate deep engagement with genomic ethics, precision medicine challenges, and neuroethics. Her work consistently bridges theoretical bioethics with practical applications, particularly in developing ethical frameworks for returning research results, addressing minority population inclusion, and evaluating neural engineering technologies. She emphasizes justice considerations and community engagement across all research domains.
Dr. Parker actively mentors graduate students in bioethics programs and serves as co-investigator on three neural engineering projects and two training grants. She directs Pitt’s Research Ethics Consultation Service and contributes to national bodies including the National Advisory Council for Human Genome Research and NHGRI Genomics and Society Working Group.
She leads key institutional initiatives through the Center for Bioethics & Health Law and Institute for Precision Medicine, developing frameworks for ethics integration in research and clinical practice while collaborating with the School of Pharmacy on pharmacogenomics education.
