Michael J. Chiarappa

Michael J. Chiarappa serves as Research Professor of Chesapeake Regional Studies and Director of Cultural and Natural Resource Initiatives at Washington College’s Center for Environment & Society. His work integrates environmental history, cultural landscapes, and maritime heritage with a regional focus on the Chesapeake and Delaware Bay ecosystems.

Chiarappa’s research explores the intersection of human communities and environments through American environmental history, maritime anthropology, vernacular architecture, and traditional ecological knowledge. He emphasizes oral history and public engagement to document cultural landscapes, historic preservation, and fisheries management, particularly in coastal communities where ecological and economic forces reshape identities.

His publications reveal a consistent focus on vernacular landscapes as historical evidence, with recurring themes in Chesapeake/Delaware Bay studies, African American environmental experiences, and photographic documentation of maritime work.
