David M. Breiner serves as Associate Professor and Associate Dean in Thomas Jefferson University's College of Architecture & the Built Environment, where he has taught since 1995 while overseeing assessment, student development, facilities, and adjunct management.
His academic credentials include a PhD and MA in History of Architecture & Urbanism from Cornell University and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Notre Dame.
Professor Breiner's research specializes in architectural history and theory with focused expertise in vernacular architecture, historic preservation, and transnational urbanism spanning the United States and Italy. His scholarly work examines pedagogical approaches to architectural history education alongside critical analyses of subjects including the New York firm Heins & LaFarge, Renaissance architect Vincenzo Scamozzi, and service learning methodologies.
He secured significant funding from the Getty Trust and Dietrich Foundation to execute a Campus Heritage Project documenting cultural landscapes across the University's East Falls Campus, currently being developed into a scholarly monograph, with additional grants supporting ongoing research initiatives in Italy.
Professor Breiner maintains active leadership in preservation communities through board service with the Philadelphia Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians, Germantown Historical Society, and East Falls Historical Society, complemented by memberships in the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Historical Society of Pennsylvania.
