Michael Emmons is a Lecturer in the Historic Preservation program at the Biden School of Public Policy & Administration, University of Delaware. He also serves as Assistant Director and Senior Architectural Historian at the Center for Historic Architecture & Design (CHAD), specializing in historic preservation projects, National Register nominations, and architectural documentation. His research focuses on early American graffiti, cultural history, and interdisciplinary preservation studies through his Early American Graffiti Project.
Education: B.A. in History (Bowling Green State University), M.A. in History (University of Connecticut, specializing in 19th-century U.S. cultural history), M.S. in Historic Preservation (University of Delaware), and current Ph.D. candidate in Preservation Studies.
Research interests include historical graffiti patterns (1700–1870), social/cultural trends in historical inscriptions, and their significance for architectural studies. He founded the crowd-sourced geospatial database, Early American Graffiti Project, and actively engages in preservation advocacy through organizations like Preservation Delaware.
Prior to academia, Emmons worked in historic property sales (over 100 transactions) and public history roles at institutions like HABS, Old Sturbridge Village, and The Mark Twain House. He has presented at conferences such as the Vernacular Architecture Forum (VAF) and Society for Historians of the Early American Republic (SHEAR).
