Michael J. Barany is a Senior Lecturer in the History of Science at the University of Edinburgh's Science Technology and Innovation Studies department. He holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University (2016) with a dissertation on 'Distributions in Postwar Mathematics', and has held postdoctoral positions at Dartmouth College and Northwestern University.
His research examines the relationship between abstract knowledge and modern society, focusing on two primary questions: how mathematics became a global discipline, and how blackboards illuminate modern social structures. His interests span global historiography, material culture, and the sociology of mathematical practice.
Barany has received numerous awards including the History in Mathematics Education Award and fellowships from the Royal Historical Society. He secured grants from the British Academy and Carnegie Trust for research on mathematical peripheries.
