Michael Ian Borer is a Professor and Chair of Sociology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). He joined UNLV in 2008 after teaching at Dartmouth College and Furman University. His research focuses on urban sociology, popular culture, religion, and qualitative methods, exploring how people create meaning through social interactions and material environments. He has authored/co-authored books such as Vegas Brews (2019), Sociology in Everyday Life (2016), and Faithful to Fenway (2008). He currently serves as Editor for the Culture Section of Sociology Compass.

Recent courses taught include the Sociology of Religion, Urbanism & Urbanization, and Visual Sociology. His awards include the 2011 Maines Narrative Research Award and the 2015 Early-Career Award from the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction.
Current projects include Exploring City Life: A Qualitative Field Methods Reader (under contract with SAGE) and studies on 'New Age' spirituality’s resurgence in American culture.
