Michael Humphrey is a Professor at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre. His research focuses on large-scale social change, globalization's impact on North-South relations, and themes such as political violence, transitional justice, and Islam in Western societies. He has conducted extensive studies in Argentina, Uruguay, South Africa, Lebanon, and Sri Lanka, exploring topics like truth recovery, victimhood, and post-conflict reconciliation.
Current research includes projects on 'trauma and victim politics' and 'amnesty and democratisation'. He teaches courses on the sociology of terror and human rights activism. His doctoral supervision covers diverse topics such as Beirut's urban sociology, gendered combat policies, and reconciliation in the Balkans. He has advised over 10 PhD students, many of whom have published influential works on topics like disappeared persons in Sri Lanka and social justice in Chile.
Humphrey's work synthesizes anthropological and sociological methods, emphasizing lived experiences to analyze global issues like political violence and transnational governance. He has received grants for projects on Latin American urban insecurity and transitional justice mechanisms. His publications span monographs, edited volumes, and journal articles, with a focus on memory, justice, and the intersection of security and identity.
