Michael Herzfeld is the Ernest E. Monrad Professor of the Social Sciences and Visiting Professor of Critical Heritage Studies at Leiden University. He holds affiliations with Harvard University (Curator of European Ethnology at the Peabody Museum) and the University of Melbourne (Honorary Professorial Fellow). His work spans social theory, anthropology of Europe/Thailand, and heritage studies.
Education: B.A. Archaeology and Anthropology (Cambridge, 1969), M.A./D.Litt. Modern Greek (Birmingham, 1972/1989), D.Phil. Social Anthropology (Oxford, 1976).
Research focuses on cultural intimacy, political symbolism, and heritage dynamics across Europe and Southeast Asia. Key themes include identity construction in Greece, artisan economies in global contexts, and urban restructuring in Rome/Bangkok.
Major awards include the Rivers Memorial Medal (1994), J.I. Staley Prize (1994), and Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1997). Active in editorial roles for American Ethnologist and Anthropological Quarterly.
Past leadership includes Chair of Anthropology at Indiana University (1987-1990) and visiting professorships at institutions worldwide. Current research explores Italian-Chinese interactions in Rome and urban planning professions.
