Michael Herzfeld is Professor in Urban Planning and Design at Harvard Graduate School of Design and Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University. His anthropological research examines cultural identity construction, social poetics, and bureaucratic symbolism, with fieldwork in Greece, Italy, and Thailand.
Herzfeld has authored influential works including Cultural Intimacy: Social Poetics in the Nation-State and The Body Impolitic: Artisans and Artifice in the Global Hierarchy of Value. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and recipient of the J.I. Staley Prize and Rivers Memorial Medal.
