Michael Herzfeld is the Ernest E. Monrad Professor of the Social Sciences in the Department of Anthropology at Harvard University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences. An eminent social anthropologist, he specializes in Mediterranean studies, bureaucratic ritualism, and cultural politics, with extensive fieldwork conducted primarily in Greece, Italy, and Thailand.
His research focuses on the intersection of state bureaucracy and local cultural practices, examining how official systems interact with grassroots resistance and informal social structures. Herzfeld's theoretical contributions include the concepts of 'cultural intimacy' and 'bureaucratic ritualism,' which have significantly influenced anthropological approaches to understanding power dynamics in everyday life.
As evidenced by his upcoming lecture at Panteion University titled 'Ethics, bureaucracy and social research,' Herzfeld remains actively engaged in academic discourse, particularly regarding ethical considerations in anthropological fieldwork and the relationship between researchers and bureaucratic institutions.
